Officials with Alberta Health Services have issued an air quality advisory for the entire Edmonton Zone, in response to current and forecast deteriorating air quality.

AHS said people living or travelling in the Edmonton Zone are advised to be aware of potential health issues stemming from current air conditions – officials said even healthy individuals may experience irritation of eyes and throat, and possible shortness of breath.

Officials advised individuals to reduce their exposure to air conditions by closing outside windows and doors, turn down thermostats and furnace fans to the minimum setting, those with air conditioners can keep the fresh-air intake closed and the filter clean, close fire place dampers on wood burning fireplaces, and not use wood-burning fireplaces, wood stoves or other smoke producing appliances.

Keep windows and vents closed on vehicles, and run car fans on re-circulate mode to avoid bringing in outdoor air.

Plus, AHS advises individuals reduce outdoor physical activity to reduce inhalation of airborne pollutants.

In addition, people with respiratory conditions, and those with existing cardiovascular conditions may notice their symptoms worsening – they’re advised to monitor their symptoms and take precautions.
