The Alberta Government is moving ahead with a plan to study whether the Queen Elizabeth Highway should be expanded to six lanes.

The province is out with a tender to find out how much the project would cost and whether expanding the number of lanes is the best solution to reducing traffic congestion.

Ninety-thousand vehicles travel the QEII each day between Edmonton and Leduc.

The province says one option is to widen the highway between Edmonton and Calgary to three lanes in each direction and four in some sections.

Other congestion management strategies, such as upgrades to public transit, will also be considered.

The province expects the traffic study to be completed by the end of 2017.
