Alberta PC Party members’ vote to reinstate health care premiums has taken the health minister by surprise.

Minister Fred Horne said that Alberta spent more on health care than any other province in the country but he was not convinced more money was the answer.

“We're not even sure if we would entertain that in Alberta.

“I'm certainly interested in what our party members think but this is a matter of public policy and we don't think money is the problem in health care,” Horne said, adding the ministry had more than enough.

“What we've been focused on is making better use of that money, focusing on things like family care clinics and primary health care.”

Former Premier Ed Stelmach’s government got rid of the premiums in 2008.

The resolution was one of 24 that passed at the party’s annual general meeting in Red Deer over the weekend.
