A Catholic priest from northern Alberta has been charged with sexual assault and sexual interference.

Manning RCMP said Abraham Azhakathu, 59, was arrested on Friday after a minor reported being assaulted several times in 2013.

Azhakathu was working in the area at the time of the alleged incidents.

Officials said he was released on Saturday under strict conditions including not being allowed to be alone with anyone under the age of 16.

He is also expected to live outside of the town but within Alberta.

RCMP said the investigation was ongoing.

Azhakathu’s first court appearance will be on March 17 at the Peace River provincial court.
