Alberta’s three area-codes are expected to run out by 2018.

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) began a process Thursday, to address the predicted telephone number shortage in Alberta and southern Ontario.

Alberta’s three area codes 403, 587, and 780, are expected to run out by June 2018, according to the Canadian Numbering Administrator, which distributes phone numbers in Canada under oversight of the CRTC.

The CRTC is creating relief planning committees to evaluate solutions and make recommendations on what to do for each region facing the number shortage.

The CRTC is asking the public and those in the telecommunications industry to take part in the committees.
