A grade 11 student from northwestern Alberta is celebrating after capturing the prestigious Manning Innovation Award for young Canadians at a national science fair this weekend.

Kyle Schole of Pickardville took home the award for figuring out a way to generate electricity out of old tires.

Schole says the win was completely unexpected.

"Winning the Manning was just the most incredible feeling I've ever had," said Schole. "I think by my science fair peers and myself, it's considered one of the most prestigious awards at the science fair."

The young scientist will be recognized for his achievement at the annual Science Fair Awards Gala in Ottawa this September.
