The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating an officer-involved shooting in west Edmonton Friday afternoon.

Edmonton police responded to a report of a break and enter at a residence in the area of 171 Street and 83 Avenue at approximately 2:30 p.m.

Upon arrival, officers learned a man had barricaded himself inside the home. Police then secured the residence with a tactical team and asked people in the neighbourhood to stay in their homes.

At approximately 6:15 p.m., the man exited the residence, a confrontation broke out and police shot him, EPS said.

The 37-year-old man was treated and transported to the hospital where he remains in serious condition, police said.

Police or other residents were not injured during this confrontation.
