The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating a shooting near Morinville that left one man dead.

ASIRT said on Friday, May 22 RCMP officers were called to a rural home, following a trespassing complaint – a 47-year-old man was under conditions to not go to that property.

Police said just after 8:15 p.m., two RCMP officers found a man in a field near that property.

According to details released by ASIRT, the man appeared to have two rifles with him, and while police tried to deal with him, a short confrontation resulted in the man being shot once by police.

The person went down into the field - ASIRT said officers on the scene could still see movement.

The RCMP Emergency Response Team (ERT) was called in and officers tried to communicate with the male, but were not successful. ERT officials approached and found the male dead.

ASIRT was deployed to investigate the shooting before the man was found dead – investigators recovered a loaded .22 calibre rifle near the man’s body, and a 30/30 lever action rifle nearby. ASIRT also seized the rifle used by police.
