Officials with the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team are investigating a violent incident Sunday night that left one individual dead, and an Edmonton Police Service officer injured.

ASIRT said the violent altercation took place at about 8:30 p.m., after officers with EPS were attempting to execute an arrest warrant on a man in the area of 53 Avenue and 149A Street.

During the arrest, there was an exchange of gunfire between officers and the man they were trying to arrest – the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

A police officer was also injured in the incident.

Sources confirmed to CTV News that the deceased is David Charles Sandaker, 24, who was wanted by police on a number of warrants for second degree murder and weapons related charges, stemming from a fatal shooting at an apartment building in late April.

In that incident, investigators said an altercation between two men escalated, and one shot the other before fleeing on foot.

The deceased in that incident was identified as Michael Alan Hill, 38.

ASIRT said their investigation into the incident was underway.

An autopsy on the deceased is scheduled for Tuesday.

The police presence remained on the scene into Monday; ASIRT said the area was expected to be cleared by Tuesday.
