RCMP and the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) are investigating after an incident in Wetaskiwin escalated early Tuesday morning.

Police said Wetaskiwin RCMP officers were called to a reported domestic situation in home in that community at 4 a.m. Tuesday.

While officers were on the scene, police said an incident occurred that prompted an officer to discharge their service pistol at an individual.

ASIRT said the officers were confronted by a 40-year-old man with a weapon – the officers retreated and contained the area and requested help from the RCMP Emergency Response Team.

As they waited for support, ASIRT said the armed man advanced towards officers again – and officers discharged police service weapons.

ASIRT said the man sustained serious injuries and was airlifted by STARS Air Ambulance to hospital, where he was in stable condition.

The RCMP Major Crimes Unit is investigating the original complaint, and ASIRT is investigating the actions of RCMP on the scene.
