A young couple trying to balance life with a new baby and a debilitating illness will have a financial buoy for next while thanks to a fundraiser organized by loved ones.

Holly and James Gerlach are $30,000 richer after 200 items were auctioned off at an event held at Northlands Saturday evening. Strangers donated many of the goods, eager to help after hearing the family's story.

Just one month after giving birth to her first child, Holly was diagnosed with Guillaine Barre Syndrome – a rare condition that left her paralyzed from the neck down. What started with a tingling sensation in her arms and legs was soon diagnosed as a serious disorder where the immune system attacks the peripheral nervous system.

Her husband has since taken time away from his job in order to look after his family.

"We are trying to raise money for them because James is unable to work, he is kind of playing Mr. mom right now," said family friend Jennifer Ruptash of the reason behind the fundraiser. "We are trying to support the family so he can be with the one he needs to be with."

James says he's overwhelmed by the support, and admits it's tough for him to receive a helping hand.

"I haven't thought of how I am going to use this money," he said. "I am kind of a proud person, so for me to even expect this is hard enough."

Holly is expected to recover, though CTV News is told it will be a slow process.
