Less than a day after police started investigating the death of a woman in Edmonton’s downtown, police said her death had been confirmed as a homicide.

Edmonton police said Thursday evening that an autopsy had been conducted, and confirmed Claudia Mary Iron-Howard, 29, died from a stab wound to the chest.

Officers were called to the area of 106 Avenue and 103 Street after a woman was found at about 4:45 a.m. with life threatening injuries.

The woman was taken to the Royal Alexandra Hospital by paramedics, where she later died.

Police said the Homicide Section was called out to the scene and has taken over the investigation.

“We have spoken to several witnesses who came upon the victim after the stabbing and we are looking for witnesses who may have seen the victim earlier in the night,” Staff Sgt. Bill Clark with the EPS Homicide Section said in a press release.

Investigators said there are no suspects.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call the Edmonton Police Service non-emergency line at 780-423-4567 or #377 on a mobile phone.
