We’re lucky in Alberta. Ukrainian culture is a big part of our province and, fortunately for us, it’s everywhere, it’s wonderful, and the food is amazing. When you get a chance to take in a Ukrainian celebration, you take it, and you load up on as many perogies as you can stomach before someone convinces you that a lively dance is the best follow-up to that third plate (opinions vary on the validity of that one).

That’s why August is such a treat: Baba Magda and the many dedicated people behind the Babas & Borsch Ukrainian Festival are back on August 20-21 in the town of Andrew! It’s already in its fourth year. Little Baba Madga grew up so fast, didn’t she?

borsch 4

If you’re new and don’t know what to check out first, we’ve got you covered. Here are just a few of the highlights (in no particular order):

Baba’s Bazaar!

Looking for a Ukrainian blouse? Some sausage? Maybe a unique piece of art? This is where you’ll find it. Plus, while you’re browsing the wares, check out the LEGO village display! This is also where you’ll find the LEGO Kid Zone and the Find Me contest—we’re not sure what that last one is, but it sounds fun…and mysterious.

Music!

/borsch-2

There will be so much music. Among the food concessions and the beer garden, you’ll find a stage featuring a rotating list of talented musicians. A full list of performers is available in the official program.

Kid stuff!

There’s the aforementioned LEGO display, a bouncy house, a family ball game (except, just to spice things up, they’re using a giant ball), something called “Kurpa Kapers,” which involves a parachute, rubber chickens, and an obstacle course, and more.  This is definitely a family-friendly event.

Beer Gardens!
(Saturday: 11am-6pm. Sunday: 11am-5pm)

It’s a family-friendly event but you can, however, still enjoy an adult beverage or two.  You’ll also want to try the signature drink, called Na Zdorovlia. They won’t reveal the secret ingredients, but it’s delicious. New this year is a talk by Rob de Groot, owner of Red Cup Distillery, Canada’s first legal moonshine still. Yes, you can even try moonshine.

Borsch cook-off!
(Sunday, 1pm)

borsch-1

It wouldn’t be the Babas & Borsch Ukrainian Festival without the Borsch cook-off! Home cooks will compete to make the best borsch for the discerning panel of judges—which includes our own Jordan Hertner.

In addition to all that, there’s dancing, food, things you can win, and even some opportunities to learn a bit about the history of Ukrainians in Alberta. There’s so much more than that to see and do at the festival that you really do need to go and see it for yourself.

The fun kicks off on Saturday, August 20, at 10am.
