Days after he was arrested and charged in connection to allegations he used a mobile device to record images inside the bathroom, a child psychiatrist appeared in an Edmonton courtroom Tuesday.

Aaron Voon, 41, has been charged with making child pornography, possession of child pornography and voyeurism.

CTV News has learned Voon is a child psychiatrist in Australia, a voicemail message at his clinic simply said the office has been closed due to “unforeseen circumstances”.

The reported incident took place on Sunday, May 22 at the Scotiabank Theatre in West Edmonton Mall – the incident was recorded by bystanders, and video was posted online showing the accused being detained by people at the theatre trying to see the man’s cellphone.

The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) released a statement Tuesday in response to the incident, saying the organization had been advised of “an incident involving a Fellow and that subsequent charges have been laid by the Edmonton Police Service”:

"The RANZCP is deeply concerned by the allegations made and are currently in communication with the appropriate authorities in Australia and Canada to ensure we obtain all the relevant information.

"Our main priority is to work closely with our membership to provide care and support to patients and their families who are affected by the immediate closure of the practice and to ensure our local members are well supported."

There is a publication ban on what happened in Tuesday’s bail hearing. A decision on bail for Voon is expected on Thursday.
