RCMP in northern Alberta said three teens who died over the weekend accidentally drowned while swimming in the Peace River.

Police said officers from the North Peace Tribal Police Services of the Fox Lake First Nations, and Fort Vermilion RCMP officers were called after three local teenaged boys, aged 14, 15 and 16-years-old were reported missing.

The three teens were swimming in the Peace River that day, and the three teens were swimming near the edge of a shallow part of the river.

It’s believed a strong current may have caught them off-guard, and they were pulled into the river.

Bystanders tried to rescue the boys, but they were not successful.

RCMP and police officers, along with local fire and rescue members, Canadian Rangers, officials with the Alberta Sustainable Resource Department and members of the community were patrolling the river, RCMP said, in an effort to find the bodies of the teens since Saturday morning.

So far, RCMP said the body of the youngest teen had been found over the weekend, the body of the 15-year-old was found just after 11 a.m. Monday, the last was found at about 1:20 p.m.

Police said the boys were not wearing life jackets at the time of the incident, and were found about 50 feet from where they disappeared.

RCMP said the identities of the three boys would not be released.
