Homicide detectives were called by firefighters Wednesday, after a woman's body was discovered at the scene of an early morning house fire in southwest Edmonton.

Emergency crews arrived just after 2:00 a.m., to find a working fire in the Callingwood neighbourhood, near 77 Avenue and 173 Street.

Crews had the fire under control soon after arriving on the scene, and firefighters soon discovered the body of a woman inside the home.

Officials said the fire appears to be suspicious – and the Edmonton Police Service Homicide Unit was called in to investigate the death.

“Upon their arrival, and upon their activating fire services inside the residence they found a deceased body and contacted us and turned the investigation over to us,” Acting Insp. Jerry Nash said.

Police have not released any information about the victim or their investigation, however one neighbour told CTV News a woman in her late 30s was living in the home.

"I just know that she had MS and she was a younger lady and she worked - I know because she kept coming and going," Neighbour Debbie Deboer said. "She struggled to do her lawn and shovel her walks."

The investigation is underway - Edmonton police said the Homicide Secton and Arson Unit, along with Edmonton Fire Rescue were assisting in the investigation.

An autopsy has been scheduled for Thursday morning.
