Canadians will spend more on Halloween than Americans, according to a NAIT marketing instructor.

Surjit Rai said in total Americans will spend $6.5 billion while Canadians collectively will spend $1.5 billion, Rai said.

"When you divide it per person we actually end up spending more," he explained.

That works out to about $77 per person in Canada and $66 per person in the U.S, Rai said.

"About a third of that $1.5 billion spent by Canadians is being spent on costumes."

There have also been some new fads that increase what Canadians spend on the holiday.

"Some people are spending thousands on decorating their front yards," Rai explained, "Making them look like graveyards for example."

He added that others invest in costumes for their pets.

According to a Value Village survey pet owners plan to spend $59 on dressing up their animals and just $32 dollars on their children.

"It's actually the third biggest holiday after Christmas and after Valentine's Day," Rai said, adding that it was a great reason to escape everyday life.

"You're wearing a mask. You can let loose, be somebody else for a day.

"I think the other thing is it gives you an excuse to knock on your neighbours doors."

Rai said those who spend the most on Halloween are men between 18 and 34-years-old.
