Days after starting his job as head of the Psychiatric department at the University of Alberta – Dr. Claudio Soares is on leave, over sexual misconduct allegations in Ontario.
Dr. Claudio Soares has been accused of having an inappropriate sexual relationship with a female patient in Ontario.
That patient was in the care of Dr. Soares for two years.
According to documents posted on the college’s website, the accused did not cooperate with the investigation.
Now, the allegations have been referred to the disciplinary committee of the College of Physicians and Surgeons in Ontario.
In addition, Dr. Soares was not registered with the College of Physicians and Surgeons in Alberta.
“Physicians who are treating patients, physicians who are teaching students, physicians who are supervising other physicians who treat patients are all required to have what is called a practice permit or a license,” Kelly Eby with the College of Physicians and Surgeons explained.
However, if a doctor’s role is entirely academic, no license is required.
The allegations will be heard before a panel made up of doctors and members of the public in Ontario – however no date has been set for his disciplinary hearing.
Dr. Soares is still listed in the University of Alberta staff directory, in a statement, university staff said they are aware of the allegations – but they cannot comment on personnel matters.
If he’s found guilty, he could be reprimanded or lose his license.
