One day after police charged a man in connection to the serious assault of a man over the weekend, the charge has been upgraded, since the victim succumbed to his injuries.

On Tuesday, Courtney McDonald, 29, was charged with aggravated assault – for his alleged involvement in an assault that occurred just after 11 am Sunday, in front of the Boyle McCauley Health Centre located near 106 Avenue and 96 Street.

Police said the assault victim, identified as 47-year-old Wesley Bunker, suffered severe head injuries in the incident, and had been rushed to hospital.

Due to the extent of Bunker's injuries, the Homicide Unit was called in to handle the investigation.

After the assault charge was laid, the victim succumbed to his injuries and detectives began working with the Crown to upgrade the charges.

On Wednesday morning, police announced McDonald was now facing a charge of manslaughter.

An autopsy on the victim has been scheduled for Thursday morning.
