On Monday morning, crews started to take down the massive Christmas tree that spent the last several weeks lighting up Churchill Square.

The 72-foot tall white spruce was first lit up November 14 – but on Monday, EPCOR crews started removing the 14,000 lights, sparklers, and the giant star from the tree.

The process is set to continue Tuesday, with City of Edmonton crews removing the tree by cutting it down section by section, the tree will then be chipped for use in City parks.

Finally, the concrete stand – weighing nearly 65 tons – will be removed from the square, it will be stored on City lands until next season.

The tree was donated by Millar Western Forest Products.
