Another major element for the downtown arena district was announced Thursday, with plans for a movie theatre complex to go in near Rogers Place.

Cineplex Entertainment announced the complex would include five VIP theatres, two high-end UltraAVX theatres, and a licenced lounge.

The VIP Cinemas are adults-only, with in-theatre dining and licenced drink service, and the UltraAVX offers reserved seating, large screens and ultra-high definition projection.

Officials told CTV News the new complex will be built on the land the Greyhound bus depot currently stands on – on 103 Street, between 103 and 104 Avenue.

“The cinema that was announced today is going into what we call the Greyhound block,” Senior VP Real Estate Glen Scott said Thursday.

The complex won’t be alone either, as Scott said it will have neighbours – and one will be tall.

“It’ll have other large-format retailers on the site who will be announced in the coming months,” Scott said. “Together with a large rental apartment building on the north end of the complex.”

The depot is slated for demolition in 2016.

The company expects the downtown theatres to open in 2018.
