The city is conducting a full review of crosswalks after admitting current safety standards aren’t good enough.  The review was prompted by the fact that a number of people have been struck at intersections with crosswalks.

A senior was stuck in April outside of a retirement home in the area of 92nd street and 94th avenue. Residents in the area say they have made numerous complaints about the intersection in the past with no results. Now the city is admitting those concerns were ignored.  Mayor Iveson says it’s time to raise the bar on Edmonton crosswalks.

“Historically, its felt that pedestrians were not the priority, that moving traffic was always the priority. And I think we have to shift that balance in favour of pedestrians in the busy urban areas of the city.” The Mayor said Wednesday.

Recommendations on how to make city crosswalks safer will be presented to council next spring.
