The city of Edmonton may soon get a new performing arts centre.

A report presented to the city by a task force said a new space was needed for the growing arts community.

"It would mean more shows, more people going to shows," Executive director of the Edmonton Arts Council John Mahon said.

Coun. Ben Henderson said many of the current art facilities are fully booked.

"We also heard loud and clear from a lot of groups that there is another mid-size space missing," he explained.

Coun. Henderson said the new centre would also be important for attracting more people to the city.

"These kinds of amenities become really critical because it's a really competitive world out there when you're looking at attracting the best and the brightest," Henderson said adding the project was still in its initial phases.

"There's some rough ideas for where it could go but getting the land together becomes the challenge there," he told CTV News.

"I don't think there's anything close to definitive on that."

However, a city map shows that the centre could be built between the new Epcor tower and the old post office building.

Those in the area said they would welcome the new facility.

"It'll certainly liven the area up. It'll be good for the city to smarten this area up," Ellen and Dana Robinson said.
