City council approved a property tax hike of 6.5 per cent Tuesday, which will see homeowners paying an average of about $149 for the year.

Property taxes for walk-up apartment owners will go up about 3.7 per cent, which adds up to be $25 a month.

The 6.5 per cent increase is larger than the proposed five per cent hike that was passed in the 2010 budget back in December. The difference is a result of some homes holding their value better than others.

City officials said last week Edmonton needs to collect $853 million this year from property taxation to meet the city's needs.

Homeowners can expect the final tax bill in the mail on May 21st and payment will be due by June 30th.
