Officials with the City of Edmonton confirmed Wednesday that the opening of the hundreds of sports fields operated by the city had been pushed to mid-May, to allow for maintenance and for the fields to dry out.

A city spokesperson told CTV News Wednesday that sports fields would officially open on May 12, weeks after the previous tentative opening date of April 28.

Back on Friday, April 21, officials advised Edmontonians to avoid damaging sports fields before they opened, in an effort to give them time to dry out and recover from the winter – as they could be saturated due to meltwater and heavy rainfall.

Using saturated fields could damage turf grass, compact soil and inhibit the growth of new grass.
