Officials with Occupational Health and Safety are investigating, and one man is in hospital with serious injuries after he was buried by gravel Wednesday night.

An official with OHS said the incident happened Wednesday at about 10:30 p.m. in the area of 130 Avenue and 56 Street.

Officials said a City of Edmonton employee was trying to empty a load of gravel and sand from street sweeping operations, when the gate of his truck didn’t open fully.

The driver, identified as a 37-year-old man, got out to look at the malfunction, when the gate fully opened and the man was buried under the gravel.

His supervisor found him and called paramedics – the man was rushed to the Royal Alexandra Hospital, at last word he was in critical condition.

A stop-use order has been issued for the truck, and the investigation continues.
