CN Rail crews are cleaning up after a train derailed southeast of Edmonton early Wednesday morning.

Officials said 23 cars were involved in the derailment that happened on tracks about 40 kilometres west of Wainwright at about 2:20 a.m.

One of the rail cars was carrying a liquid adhesive, and that CN said was not dangerous – and environmental crews were called to clean up that product.

According to CN, the 114 car train left Edmonton – where it had been inspected – and was heading to Saskatoon.

Officials said an investigation was underway, and the cleanup is underway.
