It's something that is currently illegal in Edmonton, but a city committee is set to review a report on the a proposed urban hen pilot project, and at least one member of council supports the idea.

The report, set to be introduced to the Community Services Committee on Monday, August 18, outlines the possible development of a pilot project to allow hens to be raised on private property within the City of Edmonton.

It’s a plan Mayor Don Iveson supports.

“I think it can get away from you, but if we do a pilot and we find out what are the appropriate parameters to put around this so it’s safe and compatible for Edmontonians in their neighbourhoods, then we can figure out how to make it work,” Iveson said.

The report states a number of municipalities, including Vancouver, Red Deer and Peace River allow urban hens – and a preliminary survey shows 35 percent of Edmontonians support the idea.

A vote on the pilot project will be carried out Monday.
