Edmonton’s City Council had harsh words for administrators Tuesday, reprimanding them for leaving Council in the dark about problems with the Metro LRT Line.

In Council chambers Tuesday, it was clear Councillors’ patience is wearing thin over the long-awaited and seriously delayed transit line.

“I’m still furious, frankly that project is dragging on so long,” Mayor Don Iveson said.

A report leaked to the Edmonton Journal outlined issues councillors were not told about – and it had many calling City transparency and credibility into question.

“The public trust is gone, it’s down the toilet, it’s been flushed away,” Councillor Mike Nickel said.

On Tuesday, an update on the project – Transportation General Manager said the City has tried to open the line three times since the end of May, including Sunday, July 5.

However, each time there were issues – the delays have left councillors skeptical over a new deadline. It’s hoped it will open before the new school year in the fall, but no date has been set.

Meanwhile, City officials and the contractor, Thales Group, were pointing fingers at eachother – the City placing blame on Thales, and the company saying the trains are ready to run.

“We selected world class vendors and unfortunately they have been unable to deliver for us,” Transportation General Manager Dorian Wandzura said – officials said Thales was solely responsible for the delays.

However, in a statement to CTV News, Thales said the company is completing “small activities” but the trains are “capable of running with passengers”.

Now, Council is left with a major decision.

“Council has to make a determination at some time here whether the risk of it taking somewhat longer to complete with this contract exceeds the risk of starting from scratch,” Iveson said.

Staff said Thales’ work on the Metro Line could affect whether the company could work on future projects – including the Valley LRT Line.

Also Tuesday, Iveson asked that regular, public updates on the line be issued, until the LRT line opens.
