Edmonton police have identified the man whose body was found in a burned-out rental suite early Tuesday morning.
Police said the body of Blair William Schmidt, 30, died as a result of a gunshot wound, his body was found in an apartment suite on 106 Avenue and 122 Street after a fire.
Edmonton Fire Rescue arson investigators called police to the scene of the fire at about 5 a.m. Tuesday.
At the time of the autopsy, which was carried out on Wednesday, investigators didn’t know the identity of the deceased – and turned to the public for help by releasing a description and photos of a ring the man was wearing.
Tips led police to confirm the man’s identity, and notify his next of kin.
Police said Schmidt’s death is Edmonton’s 18th homicide of 2016.
