Edmonton police said investigators recently carried out an operation with a focus on crime on the LRT, and laid more than one hundred charges against 40 individuals.

As part of Operation Derailment, officers from the EPS LRT Beat Team, and ALERT’s Drug Undercover Street Team – along with help from ETS, carried out a number of investigations between November 2016 and into early 2017, in an effort to stop street-level drug trafficking.

“It’s a public location, so there’s a lot of people waiting for buses and trains, and it’s easy to blend in,” Acting Staff Sgt. Jacob Montgomery with EPS said. “It’s easy to loiter there and blend in with the other people there.

“It’s a good opportunity for drug traffickers to conduct their trade without getting noticed or caught.”

The operation wrapped up recently – with a total of 135 criminal charges laid, many of which were for drug trafficking and possession of proceeds of crime.

Plus, 17 criminal warrants, and two bylaw warrants were executed.

A total of 40 people were charged, 35 male, and 5 female – with an average age of 28-years-old. The youngest individual charged was 16-years-old, the oldest was 43-years-old.

Throughout the operation, police said a total of 17.93 grams of methamphetamine, 1.25 grams of crack cocaine, and buprenorphine pills was seized.
