The days of drive-in movies are back for Albertans.

Fred Thompson, owner of Silver Spur Outdoor Movie Company, launched his first screening Saturday night.

"I am 75 per cent excited, 25 per cent nervous,” he said before the premiere.

He said he was very thrilled with the crowd that turned out.

“There is a fire truck here with a mountain of kids on it. That’s awesome,” he laughed.

“I think this will be a nice way for me to make a living.”

Thompson’s design for the theatre is to have it be portable and set it up in large spaces.

The film Star Trek was played before the audience at the Golden Spur Gymkhana Club in Breton.

When it came time to bring the event to life, Thompson turned to his family for help.

His mother, Denise, helped serve up the treats and his brother, Levi, helped keep the restrooms clean.

“It was a huge team effort from everyone involved,” Fred said.

The realization of her son’s dream has made Denise proud.

"We told them to just do whatever they want to do and be whoever they want to be,” she explained.

Thompson also decided to help a local family with his event and will be donating money to help in the search for Andy Nicoll, who went missing in April.

About 50 cars turned out to catch the film and many of them had two or more people.

The last permanent drive-in theatre shut down 12 years ago.
