RCMP said the driver of an SUV has been charged, after a young girl was hit by a car while crossing the street in St. Albert Tuesday morning.

St. Albert RCMP said at about 7:50 a.m. Tuesday, officers and emergency responders were called to a collision between a car and a pedestrian at Boudreau Road and Sir Winston Churchill Avenue.

A 12-year-old girl had been walking eastbound on the avenue, and was crossing Boudreau Road in the crosswalk at the time, RCMP said the traffic lights were green in the direction she was walking in.

Police said a 53-year-old St. Albert woman was driving an SUV eastbound on the avenue, and went to turn left onto Boudreau Road, hitting the girl.

The girl was rushed to hospital with what police described as “very minor injuries”.

The driver will be charged with failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk, a charge that carries a penalty of $575.
