Police north of Edmonton said a driver was facing charges, after RCMP caught him driving at speeds more than twice the limit on the highway.

Athabasca RCMP said at about 10 a.m. Saturday, officers were on Highway 55 near Amber Valley (east of Athabasca) when they saw car speeding.

Radar revealed the vehicle had been travelling at 204 kilometres per hour, in a 100 kilometre per hour zone.

An officer tried to stop the vehicle, but wasn’t able to – the vehicle turned onto a Range Road, also at a high speed. To try and stop the driver, officers set up a containment area and waited to see where the vehicle would come out.

Officers later saw the car trying to leave the area near Range Road 195A. The vehicle was stopped, and the driver and his passenger were arrested.

Now, the 42-year-old male driver is facing charges of dangerous driving, flight from police, impaired operation of a motor vehicle and driving while disqualified.

The man is scheduled to appear in an Athabasca courtroom June 8.
