More than a dozen people, including a family that was recently evacuated from Fort McMurray, were forced to rush out of their condominium complex on the city’s south side early Monday morning when fire broke out.

“At about 4 o’clock I heard my mom screaming: ‘Get out there’s a fire’,” Ashley Kelly said.

“When I heard her scream ‘There’s a fire’, [I felt] just pure panic, didn’t even know what to do,” Kelly continued. “I just grabbed my baby and ran.”

Kelly and her family moved into the condo building, on Summerside Drive, after they fled Fort McMurray.

A total of eighteen people were evacuated from the eight-unit complex after the fire broke out after 4 a.m. Monday.

Flames were first spotted on the balcony of one unit by a resident living in the building.

Everyone in danger managed to escape, although two residents suffered minor burns.

It’s believed a fire wall contained the flames to one unit – but water and smoke is believed to have extended to the other units.

“Everything we have up in Fort McMurray is ruined from smoke damage and everything left is going to be ruined from smoke damage,” Kelly said.

“We’re all pretty shaken up, scared, don’t know how we’re going to sleep again.”

An estimated damage cost, or a cause, has not yet been released. The fire was extinguished by 8:38 a.m.
