Snowy, Risk of Freezing Rain & Mild - Dec. 11, 2012
Published Tuesday, December 11, 2012 9:14AM MST
A couple cm of snow overnight & through this morning in the Capital Region.
Elsewhere, we've had reports of patchy freezing rain in Grande Prairie overnight & the radar is indicating some "wet" precip south of Camrose & through the Red Deer region around 6:30/7am.
Most areas will see snow, but there's a chance for some patchy freezing rain later today in Edmonton & areas south.
Risk for Edmonton looks highest in the late-morning hours or near Noon.
By this afternoon, the precip should move north of the Capital Region.
Heaviest of the snow overnight & early AM was in the Grande Prairie/Peace River region. Reports from that area indicate 5 to 10cm already.
Expect the band of heaviest snow today to lie from around Peace River SE towards Cold Lake.
So, Slave Lk, Athabasca areas will be in that zone & could get 5-10cm today, some spots could see it stack up a bit higher.
Temperatures hit 0 yesterday in Edmonton & we should get back to 0 again today. The Capital Region is JUST on the warmer side of the front.
You don't have to go too far E & NE to get into the -10 to -15 range for afternoon temperatures.
A low pressure system making it's way across the province will drop to the SE by tonight & with the wind swinging around to the North, we'll see some more snow drift back into the Edmonton area.
I think there's a greater risk for snow in W Alta, but the potential exists for a couple cm of snow overnight in & around Edmonton.
An arctic high pressure system is far enough east that, although it'll REALLY cool us off tomorrow, it'll only provide a glancing blow of cold air for most of Alberta.
The coldest air will slide in tomorrow & then start to push east by Thursday.
Temperatures will be in the -15 to -20 range tomorrow (probably a bit warmer earlier in the day & cooling later in the day).
By Thursday, we'll get close to -10 & then back into the -5 range by Friday in Edmonton.
Edmonton Forecast looks like this:
Today - Morning flurries. Slight risk of freezing rain late morning/early afternoon.
Mostly cloudy this afternoon.
Tonight - Cloudy with some snow. 2-5cm possible.
Wednesday - Mostly cloudy.
Near -15 in the morning.
Cooling to -20 in the afternoon.
Thursday - Mix of sun & cloud.
Friday - Mix of sun & cloud.
Saturday - Mix of sun & cloud.
Sunday - Mostly cloudy.
