The Member of Parliament for Edmonton-East has withdrawn from the Conservative caucus, after he was accused of refusing to provide a breath sample to local police over the weekend.

MP Peter Goldring is now sitting as an independent, after he was pulled over at 95 Street and 153 Avenue at about 12:30 a.m. on Sunday, December 4, by an Edmonton Police Service roving patrol as part of the Check Stop program.

Goldring had attended the Edmonton East Conservative's 13th Annual Christmas Party earlier that night.

EPS confirmed Goldring was charged with one count of refusing to blow into a breathalyzer under section 254(5) of the Criminal Code of Canada.

Police said the charge brings a 24-hour license suspension, followed by a 21-day grace period, then a 3-month license suspension – plus a mandatory court appearance.

If convicted, he could face a minimum $1,000 fine and up to 5 years in jail – and a possible further driving prohibition.

CTV News has learned hours before he was pulled over, he'd publicly challenged MLA Thomas Lukaszuk about proposed drinking and driving legislation.
