Officials at the Edmonton Humane Society announced Wednesday that the organization was at capacity, with hundreds of homeless pets, and their doors were closed to owner-surrendered pets until many of the pets in their care found homes.

EHS said a sudden rise in the number of owner-surrendered pets, and the onset of ‘kitten season’ has quickly filled up the facility – currently, 143 dogs and puppies and 439 cats and kittens are in their care.

Plus, officials said there are a large number of shelter animals who need to be spayed or neutered, and there is a backlog of surgeries. Those pets won’t be placed for adoption until their surgeries have been completed.

As a result, EHS said only the most urgent canine surrenders are being admitted – in addition to stray animals brought in from outside the City of Edmonton.

The Edmonton Humane Society is urging anyone considering adopting a pet, to consider doing so from the EHS to make space available for animals waiting to be admitted.
