A 27-year-old man is dead following a collision in northwest Edmonton.

Police said the incident happened around 4:30 a.m. at the intersection of 132 Avenue and 127 Street.

Reports indicate that a westbound Pontiac Grand Prix entered the intersection on a red light and hit a northbound Nissan Sentra in the right front bumper.

The impact caused both vehicles to spin out of control and the Pontiac hit a large wooden post in the northwest corner of the intersection.

The driver of the vehicle, who police said was not wearing a seatbelt, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 36-year-old driver of the Nissan, whose vehicle also hit the post, was taken to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Investigators said the Pontiac had just been stolen from the area and they believe speed was a factor in the collision.
