Edmonton welcomed an indoor farmers’ market Sunday with the grand opening of Mother's Market.

Located at 102 Avenue and 109 Street, the market will be open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

“Calgary has got four of these markets and they are all big. There is a huge demand,” founder Bob Holm said.

“It was time for a market like this in Edmonton.”

Holm said they currently had 50 venders in the space but according to the website there are 130 stalls available.

He said the reaction has been positive.

Amanda Pho said she jumped at the chance to have a booth at the market.

“I think this is really nice because most farmers’ markets don’t open on Friday and we are the only ones here that are open Friday.”

Shopper Amanda White said the location was a key attraction for her.

“It's closer and more convenient for the people living in this area.  Especially during the winter instead of having to go all the way down to city hall.”

Peter Mair said he thought it was a good use for the vacant building.

“I also like the Mother's Guitar that used to be here, but they've moved on but I think it's a really good use and hopefully it's going to be active all year long.”

He added it would be a welcome place in the winter, “because we tend to get locked in the home.”
