A woman did not survive an early-morning hit-and-run incident in northeast Edmonton.

Investigators with the EPS Major Collisions Unit responded to the scene, near 131 Avenue and Fort Road, after the 53-year-old victim was apparently struck by a vehicle early Wednesday morning.

Witnesses rushed to help the woman after she was hit at about 1 a.m., but she was pronounced dead on the scene.

Investigators said the pedestrian was outside the crosswalk, and didn't have the right-of-way when she was hit.

Later Wednesday, police said there were surveillance cameras recording the collision.

"I saw the video for the vehicle, it was a dark-coloured SUV, with a broken out or burnt out headlight as a result of the collision," Acting Sgt. Darren Sunley said. "It's going to have significant damage."

Damage is likely visible on the front bumper, hood, and possibly the windshield of the vehicle, police also said the driver was likely going slightly faster than the speed limit at the time.

"The vehicle was traveling at about 50 to 60 kilometres per hour at this point," Sunley said.

Anyone with details on the crash is asked to call EPS at 780-423-4567 or #377 on a mobile phone, or by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
