A natural gas leak in southwest Edmonton, city officials and police were forced to evacuate part of a neighbourhood to evacuate for several hours Tuesday.

Just before noon, officials said a 2 inch natural gas pipeline was ruptured in the area of 120 Street and 83 Avenue.

While crews worked to stop the leak, police and firefighters evacuated residents of the portion of Windsor Park south of 87 Avenue due to the risk of the gas exploding.

“There is some ignition sources that could come into play,” Deputy Fire Chief John Lamb said during the emergency. “At this point there is no indication that it has leaked off of any of the sewer systems at this point.”

The evacuation order was lifted by 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

It’s believed the rupture was caused by crews working in the area, who accidentally cut the gas line.
