Family Day 2016 events in and around Edmonton

There’s a lot going on in Edmonton this Family Day weekend, which is a good thing. There’s almost too much to do, in fact! But fret not, because we’ve compiled this helpful list of events around Edmonton.

City Hall & Churchill Square: Noon - 4 p.m.
City Hall is the place to be for all of your Family Day fun! Enjoy performances by Hoffman & Brown, Nikolai the Juggler, a Concrete Theatre performance of the play The Early Bloomers, crafts, balloon sculptures and more! Then venture outside to go for a hayride and check out the Family Day games and activities on the Square. Food trucks will be on site.

Edmonton Valley Zoo: Noon – 4 p.m.

Bundle up your family, beat the winter blues and "Get Closer" for some Family Day Fun! Stay warm while you visit the Polar Bear craft table or participate in the Animal Families scavenger hunt. Learn why Edmonton Valley Zoo is an Arctic Ambassador Centre for Polar Bears International and visit our free photo booth to take home a family memory!

Reuse Centre: Noon – 3 p.m.

Recover Treasure at the Reuse Centre. The Reuse Centre is hosting a Family Day Open House event. Participate in a reuse crafting workshop, shop through the treasure trove of items or take a tour and learn more about reusing.

Free skating at several rinks

Free skating is available at City of Edmonton outdoor ice surfaces in Hawrelak, Jackie Parker, Victoria and Castle Downs parks. Although Hawrelak Lake is closed, skaters are welcome on the Hawrelak Park alternate ice surface at Shelter #2, and the Freezeway skating trail is new this year, next to the Victoria Park Oval.

Telus World of Science Edmonton

It’s the final day for the Beyond Rubik’s Cube exhibition. In addition, there will be an Edmonton Eskimos meet and greet from 1-3 p.m., and all of the regular awesome TWOSE exhibits and activities!

Legislature: 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Silverskate Festival at William Hawrelak Park: 9 a.m. – 9 p.m.

Embrace winter at the Silver Skate Festival, a free family-friendly winter celebration in Hawrelak Park blending sport, recreation, arts and culture, showcasing various skating disciplines and promoting outdoor activities. Free weekend shuttle service.

McCauley Rink : Noon - 5 p.m.

Head over for the Family Day Skate! Hot dogs and hot chocolate will be served.

Stollery Family Day ClassicFeb 12-15

This year’s tournament will be held in Edmonton at the Terwillegar Rec Centre, February 12-15, 2016.To date, the Stollery Family Day Classic hockey tournament raised over $1.5 million for the Stollery Children's Hospital Foundation and Hockey Edmonton Development. Join us this year playing for healthy kids!

Free Admission at Provincial Museums and Historic Sites:

Oil Sands Discovery Centre – Fort McMurray- Learn about the inner workings of the human body with The Odd-Lot Puppetry Company's all-new black light puppet show, Talent Inside. Show times are 10:30 a.m., noon, 1:30 p.m., and 3 p.m. Enjoy a full day of fun family activities!

Rutherford House – Edmonton - Step back in time to the Edwardian era and explore the elegant home of Alberta’s first Premier and founder of the University of Alberta. Make a fun craft, play old-fashioned games, and sample delicious cookies baked in the wood-burning stove. Spend the day with family in a historic atmosphere and discover who the Rutherfords were and the activities they enjoyed.

Reynolds-Alberta Museum  – Wetaskiwin

Family Day fun at the Reynolds-Alberta Museum means playing giant versions of your favourite board games and donning white gloves to check out the cockpit of a Hawker Hurricane vintage fighter jet. Cozy up with the family to watch some vintage cartoons at the indoor Drive-In theatre

Family Day Unplugged

The City of Edmonton’s Family and Community Support Services Team is inviting Edmontonians to disconnect from technology and reconnect with each other for at least two hours this Family Day!

Elk Island Park

Get outside and embrace the winter season at Elk Island this Family Day. Pack a thermos and set out with your family by snowshoe or cross country skis to explore one of the many trails in the park. Or lace up your skates and skate around High Island on Astotin Lake for truly unique winter experience. Later, warm up with a hot meal at the golf course and take in some local live music.
