Family and friends of a 14-year-old boy who went missing this summer and whose remains were recently found near Fort Saskatchewan held a funeral for the young man Saturday.

Alexander Xavier Smith was reported missing in July and on Friday police confirmed remains found near Fort Saskatchewan in August were his.

Alex's family and friends said their final goodbyes and laid the young man to rest Saturday.

"He was a good, gentle loving kid," said Sophie Smith, Alex's grandmother.

"It's obviously a very, very hard situation and just so many questions and so many unknowns. Friends have been working with Alex for years and they know him quite well, so to have it end this way is quite heartbreaking," said Darb Erickson who knew Alex during his time with Young Life Canada.

Investigators say they believe the teen was living a high-risk lifestyle and was involved with drugs.

His family says he was last seen at his grandmother's residence in Edmonton on June 28.

Police are looking for the public's assistance, as they continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding Smith's death.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS ( 8477).
