RCMP south of Edmonton are investigating a crash that left two dead early Tuesday morning, and those two have been identified as a young mother, and her infant daughter.

Thorsby RCMP said the collision unfolded on Highway 39, near Range Road 33 at about 1 a.m. Tuesday.

Police said an SUV, being driven by a 20-year-old woman, with a 7-month-old girl inside, crossed the centre line into the path of an oncoming tanker truck.

After the crash, RCMP said a fire broke out at the scene, causing extensive damage to the tanker.

According to police, the woman and the child were killed instantly, the driver of the truck suffered minor injuries.

Later Tuesday, CTV News confirmed with family that Rebecca Shipton-Maine, and her daughter Emma, were the two who died in the crash.

The highway had to be closed for several hours Tuesday morning as crews cleaned up the scene; crews were busy later in the morning cleaning up the fracking oil that spilled in the crash.
