An Alberta mother who pleaded guilty to manslaughter charges in the death of one of her twin daughters will be back in court next week for a sentencing hearing.

The two-year-old girls were found suffering from injuries and severe malnourishment in their parents’ Edmonton home in 2012.

One of the girls, who weighed just 13 pounds, went into cardiac arrest and slipped into a coma in hospital.

The mother and father, who cannot be named, fought for months to keep the girl on life support.

Two provincial courts agreed that the girl, known as M, should be taken off machines as per the advice of doctors.

The mother has also pleaded guilty to aggravated assault of the other girl and failing to provide the necessaries of life.

Last June the girls’ father was sentenced to 15 years in jail but was credited for three years served and for showing remorse.

The surviving twin, as well as a healthy older brother, were placed in foster care after their parents were arrested.

The hearing will be held in Edmonton’s Court of Queen’s Bench from March 2 to 6.
