Four teens are dead and another is in critical condition after a collision in Grande Prairie overnight.

The five boys, ranging in age from 15 to 16-years-old, were driving along Highway 668 near Highway 40 when they were hit by a pick up truck.

The 21-year-old driver of the truck fled the scene but was arrested later. Police expect to lay charges shortly.

The teens have been identified by a teammate on their football team as Matt Deller, Vince Stover, Tanner Hildebrand, and Walter Borden-Wilkins.

Zak Judd was airlifted to an Edmonton hospital from the scene.

All of the young boys were students at Grande Prairie's Composite High School.

Mayor Bill Given said the community was in shock.

"I think people are stunned. Any loss of a young life is particularly tragic, but to lose four young members of our community in one fell swoop is particularly heart shattering," Given told CTV News over the phone.

RCMP officer Cpl. Carol McKinley said they have counsellors in place to help the community deal with the tragedy.

"We have held two critical incidents stress debriefings this morning to help youth, family, school, staff, who are impacted by the event,

"We certainly are working very closely with victims' assistance and some of our local mental health professionals to make sure that there are plans in place to help students and staff cope with the loss," she added.

Fifteen-year-old Judd is still in hospital with critical injuries.

RCMP continue to investigate and said speed and alcohol may have been factors.
