Edmonton police are investigating, after a collision between a garbage truck and a child on a bike took place Wednesday morning, leaving the child in hospital with serious injuries.

Police said the crash took place at the intersection of 28 Street and 43A Avenue, and was reported to police at about 8:45 a.m. Wednesday.

According to investigators, the truck was headed south on the street, waiting at a yield sign to make a left-hand turn onto the avenue.

The cyclist, an 11-year-old girl, was reportedly on the driver-side of the truck – as the truck driver started to make the left-hand turn, the truck hit the cyclist.

The girl suffered life-threatening injuries; she was treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to hospital, where she remained Wednesday afternoon.

Police are still investigating.

A staff member with Velma E. Baker School, which is near the scene of the crash, told CTV News the girl, is a student there.

Officials with Edmonton Public Schools said counsellors were at the school to help students and staff.

“An incident like this can be upsetting for people and knowing that we have dispatched a team of counsellors to the school who will be available to speak with anyone who’s been affected by this incident,” Brad Stromberg with Edmonton Public said.

As a City of Edmonton vehicle was involved in the crash, the Deputy City Manager said officials are cooperating with police. The City is also conducting their own internal investigation to determine what happened.
