In an effort to promote literacy and make reading fun for youngsters Edmonton's Happy Harbor Comics gave away free comics on Saturday.

The local comic book store has taken part in the international event for the past few years, handing out thousands of free comics.

Organizers say comics are a great way for youngsters to develop an interest in reading.

"There are too many kids sitting in font of the TV and video games these days and I think comic books are a good way to get them excited about reading," said Chris Russell.

Stores from around the world mark Free Comic Book Day on the first Saturday in May every year.

Happy Harbor Comics is giving away 2,000 comic books this year.
