Alberta Health Services said a privacy investigation had wrapped up, and officials were notifying hundreds of Albertans that their health information had been accessed, inappropriately, by a former AHS employee.

AHS said the information was accessed in the electronic health record systems, Netcare and Netcare Personal Directory between January 2004 and July 2015 – officials said the patient records had not been altered or impacted.

Officials were first alerted to the access through a complaint by another AHS employee, which prompted an audit into all information accesses made by that former employee.

The case was also reported to Alberta Health and the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Alberta.

AHS said the information of 1,309 Albertans was inappropriately accessed by the former employee. A further 11,539 people will also be notified that their demographic information was viewed by the same individual.

Those affected by this will be completed through letters mailed Monday, September 26.

AHS has also established a phone line to support those impacted by the breach, through Health Link. Information about that line is included in the letters sent to all individuals impacted.
